**Short answer:** To automate holiday lighting postcards in 2026, build one send list from last season's customers, open quotes and the addresses around installs you've already booked, set your card and offer once, then schedule each drop by the date it should land, not the date it ships. Aim the first wave to hit mailboxes the week after Halloween, keep a weekly wave going as installs book, and get your last card in homes by **November 13**, before the Thanksgiving rush. It's October 20. If nothing has gone out yet, skip Marketing Mail and send First-Class.

We run house-photo postcard campaigns for home-service contractors at Wrk Less, and we built the system behind them: one address in, a branded postcard of that exact house out, or a plain-English reason it wasn't mailed. The [postcard case study](/case-studies/home-service-postcard-api) covers the build, and our [AI-generated postcards guide](/blog/ai-generated-postcards-contractors) covers why a card of their own house works. This post is the holiday playbook: who to mail, when, what it costs and what to automate.

## When should holiday lighting postcards land?

Later than you'd think for new homeowners, earlier than you'd think for past customers. [Jobber's holiday lighting guide](https://www.getjobber.com/academy/holiday-lighting/christmas-light-installation-business-tips/) says to reach returning customers as early as late August or early September, and to market to a wider audience in October or early November. It quotes installer Kirk Brown: "A lot of people have a one-holiday-at-a-time mentality. So don't expect a great response from your audience until after Halloween." The same guide puts the season at November 1 through the end of January, with the busiest stretch the two weeks before and after Thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving is Thursday, November 26, 2026. So the window that matters for new customers runs from Monday, November 2 to about November 12. That's when the card needs to be on the counter.

USPS says most First-Class Mail arrives in 1 to 5 business days, and most Marketing Mail in 3 to 10 ([USPS Postal Customer Guide](https://pe.usps.com/resources/Misc/2025_USPS%20Postal%20Customer%20Guide_080725.pdf)). Working backward with weekends excluded, here's the 2026 calendar we'd run:

| Wave | Who's on the send list | Mail it | Class | Lands (our math) |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| **Rebook** | Last season's customers who haven't booked | This week | First-Class | Oct 21–27 |
| **Post-Halloween** | New homeowners in the areas you serve | Wed, Oct 28 | First-Class | Oct 29–Nov 4 |
| **Around booked installs** | Addresses near each install you've scheduled | Mondays, Nov 2 and Nov 9 | First-Class | Nov 3–9 and Nov 10–16 |
| **Last call** | Anyone on the list who hasn't booked | Fri, Nov 6 | First-Class | Nov 9–13 |
| **Next season** | Everyone you installed this year | Late August 2027 | Either | Before the rush starts |

Why not Marketing Mail? It's cheaper, but a card mailed October 21 could land anywhere from October 26 to November 4. That's a ten-day spread for a season that turns on a two-week window. Use it next August, when you have runway.

## Who goes on a holiday lighting send list?

Four groups, in this order:

1. **Last season's customers.** Your best list. They already said yes once.
2. **Open quotes.** People who asked for a price last year or this fall and never booked.
3. **Addresses around booked installs.** When a homeowner books, the houses nearby see your crew on the ladder. A card showing their own house lit up lands the same week.
4. **New homeowners in the areas you serve.** The widest group, so it goes last and gets the tightest offer.

Then take people *off*: anyone already booked this season, anyone who asked not to be contacted, anyone who already got this wave's card and any address that came back as returned mail. Our postcard system won't re-mail a house that already got a card, and a returned address gets suppressed so you stop paying to mail it.

### The mistake we see first: the wrong address

Your send list is only as good as the address on each customer. When we built a [Jobber, GoHighLevel and QuickBooks integration](/case-studies/jobber-gohighlevel-quickbooks-integration) for a field-service company, the first job wasn't automation. It was a master customer record, so each customer was one customer across all three systems, plus web form leads that land on the existing customer instead of creating a duplicate, with any missing site address filled in.

That matters even more for postcards. The billing address in your books might be an office or a P.O. box. The card needs the house you'll actually light, or it shows the wrong house. Build the list from the service address, deduplicated across your CRM, field-service app and accounting, before you mail a single card.

## What does it cost to mail holiday lighting postcards?

Postage is the line item that's fixed for everyone. These are USPS prices in effect since July 12, 2026 ([USPS Notice 123](https://pe.usps.com/resources/PriceChange/July%202026%20Price%20Change%20-%20Notice123%20PDF%20-%207.2.26.pdf)), with our math for 500 cards. Printing and design aren't included.

| How it's mailed | Postage per card | 500 cards |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Postcard stamp (cards up to 4-1/4 x 6 in.) | $0.65 | $325.00 |
| First-Class commercial postcard, automation, mixed | $0.495 | $247.50 |
| First-Class commercial postcard, automation, 5-digit | $0.453 | $226.50 |
| Marketing Mail automation letter-size card, 5-digit (200-piece minimum) | $0.395 | $197.50 |

Three things owners ask us:

- **Did the holiday surcharge hit postcards?** No. The temporary peak-season prices that started October 4 cover Priority Mail Express, Priority Mail, Ground Advantage and Parcel Select only. [USPS says](https://about.usps.com/newsroom/national-releases/2026/0825-usps-announces-temporary-price-change-for-2026-holiday-shipping-season.htm) no other products are affected.
- **Is there a permit fee?** If you mail at commercial prices yourself, Notice 123 lists a $390 annual mailing fee per office of mailing for First-Class presort or Marketing Mail.
- **What about Every Door Direct Mail?** EDDM letters pay Saturation prices ($0.255 in Notice 123), but every door gets the same card. It can't put a homeowner's own house on the front.

## What should you automate, and what should stay manual?

Automate the repeatable parts. Keep the decisions with you.

**Automate:**
- **The trigger.** When an install is scheduled in your field-service app, the addresses around it go on next Monday's send list automatically. An n8n workflow handles this well, the same way we wire [Retell voice agents to a CRM](/retell-ai-integrations-and-webhooks.php).
- **The suppression.** Booked, opted out, already mailed or returned: off the list without anyone remembering to check.
- **The results.** Every address comes back as mailed or with a clear reason it wasn't, written onto the customer record so your team can see it.
- **The tracking.** A QR code and a phone number on every card, so each booking ties back to a wave.

**Keep manual:** the offer, the send dates, a look at real cards before anything prints and the go button.

### Make the phone part of the campaign

Cards drive calls, and holiday lighting calls come at night, when homeowners are looking at a dark roofline. If those calls hit voicemail, you paid postage to send leads to a competitor. Put an [after-hours AI line](/after-hours-ai-call-answering.php) behind the number on the card that quotes your price range, books the estimate and [hands off to a person](/blog/ai-receptionist-transfer-to-human) when a caller wants one. Our [AI receptionist pricing breakdown](/blog/ai-receptionist-pricing-2026) shows what that costs at 100 and 300 calls a month.

One caution: a postcard isn't permission to text. If you want to follow up by text, collect consent on the booking page, and keep any automatic reply to a missed call purely informational. Our [missed-call text-back guide](/blog/missed-call-text-back-tcpa-2026) explains where that line sits.

### Add the free digital touch

USPS [Informed Delivery](https://www.usps.com/business/informed-delivery.htm) sends subscribers a grayscale image of the address side of their letter-size mail before it arrives, and USPS reports 63.4% of those notifications are opened daily on average. Put your logo and offer on the address side too, not just the photo side. Mailers can also attach a full-color, clickable image to the preview, and [USPS's 2026 Informed Delivery add-on](https://www.usps.com/business/promotions-incentives.htm) adds a 1% postage discount when it's paired with an eligible mailing promotion.

## Questions people ask

### When should I mail holiday lighting postcards?

Reach last season's customers first, ideally in late August or early September, as Jobber's holiday lighting guide recommends. For new homeowners, aim for cards to land the week after Halloween. In 2026, with Thanksgiving on November 26, get your last wave into homes by about November 13, before the busiest two weeks of installs.

### Is it too late to send holiday lighting postcards in late October?

No. Jobber's guide quotes an installer saying homeowners don't respond well until after Halloween, so late October is the right time for new-customer cards. Use First-Class Mail, which USPS says usually arrives in 1 to 5 business days. A card mailed Wednesday, October 28, 2026 should land between October 29 and November 4.

### How much does it cost to mail holiday lighting postcards in 2026?

Postage since July 12, 2026 is $0.65 per card with a postcard stamp, $0.453 to $0.495 per card for First-Class commercial automation postcards, and $0.395 for a 5-digit Marketing Mail automation letter-size card, per USPS Notice 123. That's $197.50 to $325 in postage for 500 cards, before printing and design.

### Who should be on a holiday lighting postcard send list?

Start with last season's customers, then open quotes, then the addresses around installs you've already booked, then new homeowners in the areas you serve. Remove anyone already booked, anyone who opted out, anyone who already got that wave's card and any address that came back as returned mail. Use the service address, not the billing address.

### Can I text homeowners after they get my postcard?

Not just because they got a card. A postcard doesn't give you consent to send marketing texts. Collect consent on your booking page or form, keep any automatic reply to a missed call purely informational, and honor STOP across every system you text from.
