**Short answer:** AI assistants now call businesses for their users. Google places automated calls to book appointments and check prices. Gemini is testing a "Call for Me" feature. Meta's Muse and the startup Instinct have added outbound calling to US businesses. If your phone line doesn't answer, recognize and correctly handle these callers, those bookings never reach your calendar.

Most owners think of AI on the phone as something *they* deploy. The other side is here too: your customers' assistants are dialing you. This post covers what's calling, what to check in your Google Business Profile, and how we build the answering layer so these calls turn into booked jobs.

## Who is calling your business on a customer's behalf?

Four sources matter right now:

- **Google automated calls.** When customers ask Google Search or Maps for help, Google may call your business for them to [book an appointment, check a restaurant's wait time, or confirm price and availability](https://support.google.com/business/answer/16190256?hl=en). Google says these calls are monitored and recorded. If you work with an online booking provider, Google may book through that partner instead.
- **Gemini "Call for Me."** On September 24, 2026, Google began testing a feature that lets Gemini [call businesses for users](https://techcrunch.com/2026/09/24/google-tests-letting-gemini-make-phone-calls-initially-for-us-pixel-owners/). It can introduce itself, navigate phone menus, wait on hold, and reschedule appointments. It starts with US Pixel 11 owners who pay for Gemini, and it dials from the user's own phone number.
- **Meta Muse.** Meta [expanded its Muse beta for outbound calls to US businesses](https://techcrunch.com/2026/09/17/rival-ai-agents-instinct-and-metas-muse-both-add-the-ability-to-make-calls/) in mid-September. Reuters reported that users can ask Muse to book haircuts, check stock, or [get quotes from contractors](https://www.channelnewsasia.com/business/exclusive-meta-testing-human-concierge-its-new-personal-ai-agent-muse-6402946).
- **Instinct Concierge.** Instinct's founder announced on September 16 that its assistant can now make calls. Examples include booking restaurants that don't take online reservations and getting on a dentist's cancellation list. It's in early access ([TechCrunch](https://techcrunch.com/2026/09/17/rival-ai-agents-instinct-and-metas-muse-both-add-the-ability-to-make-calls/)).

| Caller | Status | What it does on your line | What your line must handle |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google automated calls | Live in the US, except Indiana, Louisiana, Minnesota, Montana and Nebraska | Books appointments, checks wait times, confirms price and availability | Accurate hours, prices and open slots, answered on the first try |
| Gemini Call for Me | Small test, US Pixel 11 owners with a paid Gemini plan | Navigates menus, waits on hold, books and moves appointments | Phone menus a bot can get through; caller ID is the customer's own number |
| Meta Muse | Beta for outbound calls to US businesses | Bookings, stock checks, contractor quotes | Quote intake that captures scope and a real callback number |
| Instinct Concierge | Early access | Reservations, cancellation lists | Waitlist and cancellation handling |

## Why do these calls fail at most businesses?

Because most phone setups were built for humans calling during business hours.

Reuters reported that one Meta employee said his insurance company kept "[hanging up on Muse when they hear it is AI](https://www.channelnewsasia.com/business/exclusive-meta-testing-human-concierge-its-new-personal-ai-agent-muse-6402946)." The same report said Meta tested quietly routing some Muse calls to human contractors, then rolled that test back after an executive called the missing disclosures "a miss." Meta told Reuters it will only roll calling out "when it's ready and with the proper disclosures."

The lesson for owners: the businesses that hang up, send calls to voicemail, or trap callers in a phone menu lose the booking. When a customer asks an assistant to get quotes from several contractors, the quotes come from the businesses that answered.

We see three failure points over and over:

1. **No answer.** The call lands after hours or during a rush and goes to voicemail. A voicemail box doesn't book anything. That's a [missed call](/missed-call-capture.php) and a lost job.
2. **Staff hang up.** A front desk that treats every robotic voice as spam will drop real customer requests.
3. **Details don't make it into the system.** Someone takes the booking on a sticky note, and it never reaches the calendar or CRM.

## How we build the answering layer for assistant callers

This is the work we do at Wrk Less. Here's exactly how we set up a receptionist and after-hours layer to handle these calls.

**We answer every call, every time.** Our [AI receptionists](/ai-receptionist-for-small-businesses.php) pick up on the first ring, around the clock. [After-hours answering](/after-hours-ai-call-answering.php) is where most assistant bookings would otherwise die.

**We teach the agent to recognize an assistant caller.** Gemini, for example, [introduces itself](https://techcrunch.com/2026/09/24/google-tests-letting-gemini-make-phone-calls-initially-for-us-pixel-owners/) when it calls. We script the agent to listen for an assistant announcing itself or saying it's "calling on behalf of" someone, switch into a structured booking flow, and never treat the caller as spam.

**We confirm details out loud, one field at a time.** Customer name, callback number, service, address if it's a field-service job, and the date and time. The agent reads each one back and gets a yes. We keep the exchange short and explicit, so nothing depends on interpretation.

**We don't trust caller ID.** Gemini Call for Me dials from the customer's own number, but other assistants may not. We always ask for the best callback number and store it separately from the caller ID.

**We check real availability before offering times.** The agent reads open slots from the calendar, so it never offers a time that's already booked.

**We write the booking straight into the calendar and CRM.** Every call creates or updates the contact, books the slot, and tags the lead source as "AI assistant" with the platform named when the caller says it. You can then see how much business this channel brings in.

**We hand off what the AI shouldn't decide.** Quote requests with complex scope, emergencies and upset customers go to a human with a summary attached.

**We keep follow-up texts compliant.** A confirmation text to the customer is helpful, but consent and opt-out rules still apply. We wire those the same way we described in our post on [the FCC's new opt-out rules](/blog/fcc-opt-out-rules-2026).

**We fix the phone menu.** If your line opens with a long "press 1" menu, we shorten it or put the AI receptionist in front of it. A menu that confuses people also confuses assistants.

## What should you check in Google's "Collected info" tab?

Google now shows you what its automated assistant learned about your business. On September 14, 2026, Google Business Profile announced that you can [review details verified by its automated assistant](https://www.seroundtable.com/google-business-profiles-new-collected-info-41672.html) in a new "Collected info" tab and delete outdated ones. You'll find it under Edit profile, then Collected info.

According to the dashboard text Search Engine Roundtable published, this information "was collected in phone or chat conversations with your business" and is "used to match your business with customers looking for services like yours." It affects which searches you show up for.

Google's help page also says information you give on its automated calls can be [added to your profile on your behalf](https://support.google.com/business/answer/16190256?hl=en). Those updates are marked "Pending" and reviewed for up to five business days.

Our monthly check for clients:

- [ ] Open Edit profile → Collected info and read every line
- [ ] Delete anything outdated or wrong (old hours, services you dropped, wrong pricing)
- [ ] Compare it with your actual hours, service list and service area
- [ ] Review any posts Google published for you (Google emails you when it does)
- [ ] Brief your staff and your AI receptionist on the questions Google's assistant asks
- [ ] Make sure the phone number on the profile reaches your answering layer

We fold this into our [AI marketing](/ai-marketing.php) and local presence work, because your profile is now partly written by phone calls.

## Should you opt out of Google's booking calls?

You can. Google lets you tell its assistant on the call "Please stop calling my business," or change the settings yourself. A verified profile can go to Advanced settings and turn off "Bookings and inquiries from customers," "Keep your profile up to date," and "Post to your profile on your behalf" ([Google](https://support.google.com/business/answer/16190256?hl=en)). Even after opting out, Google may still occasionally call manually to confirm business details.

Our recommendation is direct:

- **Keep "Bookings and inquiries from customers" on** if your line answers every call. These are customers trying to book you. Turning it off blocks a path to new business.
- **Fix your answering before you consider opting out.** If calls go unanswered, opting out just hides the problem.
- **Keep "Keep your profile up to date" on, and review Collected info every month.** Accurate details help you get matched to the right searches.
- **Turn off "Post to your profile on your behalf"** if you actively manage your own posts and want full control of what appears.

One more point from Google: it says it will never ask for payment, credit card information, or account passwords on these calls. Train your staff on that so scammers can't pose as Google.

## Get your phone line ready for assistant callers

Customers are handing their phone calls to software, and that software books whoever answers and confirms cleanly. We build the receptionist, after-hours and CRM layer that makes your business that answer.

[Book an AI systems assessment with Wrk Less](https://cal.com/kris-hubbard-wrk-less/ai-systems-assessment) and we'll test how your line handles an assistant caller today, then show you what to fix.

## Questions people ask

### Is it really Google when an automated voice calls to book an appointment?

It can be. Google may phone a business for customers who ask Search or Maps to book an appointment, check a wait time, or confirm prices. Google says it never asks for payment, card numbers, or passwords on these calls. Anyone requesting money to keep you listed is not Google, so hang up.

### What happens if my business ignores calls from AI assistants?

You lose the request. Assistants like Gemini Call for Me, Meta Muse and Instinct are calling to book, reschedule, check stock, or collect quotes for real customers. If the call reaches voicemail, a busy front desk, or a confusing phone menu, the customer's booking goes to a competitor who picked up and confirmed the details.

### How do I turn off Google's automated booking calls?

Verify your Business Profile, open Advanced settings, and switch off Bookings and inquiries from customers. You can also tell the caller, Please stop calling my business. Google may still occasionally call manually to confirm details. We advise fixing how your phone gets answered first, because these calls come from people trying to hire you.

### Where do I see what Google learned about my business from phone calls?

Open your Business Profile, choose Edit profile, then the Collected info tab. It lists details Google's automated assistant gathered in phone or chat conversations, which Google uses to match you with customer searches. Delete anything outdated, such as old hours or dropped services, and recheck it every month.

### Can an AI receptionist book appointments made by another AI?

Yes, when it's built for it. Ours recognize an assistant announcing itself, confirm each detail aloud, ask for a callback number instead of trusting caller ID, check live calendar availability, then write the booking and contact into your CRM tagged with its source. Complex quotes and emergencies route to a person.
